Consider this part 2, or a follow-up post, to my previous entry on writing a compelling blog. In part 1, I gave a few suggestions on making your blog interesting to read. This post is on getting people to actually read your blog. Something that is not easy…I know…I’m living it.
Let’s face it, there are millions upon millions of blogs out there. It is very difficult to get more than a few dedicated, repeat readers. Many, if not most, blogs will never develop a large fan base. This is why I suggest blogging because you enjoy it…that may be the only reward. However, there are things you can do to improve readership.
- Be consistent - You may not need to post every day, but post frequently and be consistent. Having a constant supply of fresh brain food will help train your readers to keep coming back for more.
- Get involved - Read other blogs and comment. Be involved in the community and add value. Get your name out there. It’s about marketing your personal brand.
- Be everywhere - get an account on the major web services. Twitter, Del.icio.us, Facebook and Flickr…these are some of the major places…and there are many others. Google loves these places and getting your name on these services will aid in getting your personal brand in Google.
- Work at it - Like anything else of value in this world, it doesn’t come easy. It takes effort and time.
- Be patient - If you build it, they will come…but they may not move very quickly. Be patient and don’t despair if you don’t get 10,000 visits after the first month.
- Diversify - If you can, do videos or podcast. Live streaming is the next “big thing”. Use services like uStream.tv, Mogulus orJustin.tv as a promotion vehicle for your blog. Live streaming and lifecasting is still relatively new, fresh and edgy…a great way to set yourself apart.
Again, these are just a few tips and suggestions. I’m sure you have others to add so please feel free to comment or e-mail me and share them with the world (see tip above about getting involved).
